| Tying Instructions by Frank Mihalic |
 |
1. Start the tread and tie in a length
of medium silver Mylar at the rear of the hook shank |
 |
2. Move the thread toward the eye.
Wrap the shank with mylar. Tie off the mylar strip and trim. |
 |
3: Loosely tie a bunch of white Super
Hair on top of the shank. Distribute the hair evenly around the shank so
it has covered the bottom and sides. |
 |
4. Add several strands of flash on top
of the white hair. |

5. Tie the darker color of Super Hair
on the top of the flash. Whip finish. |
 |
6. Saturate the hair with a thin coat
of epoxy being sure to rotate the fly and hold the hair so that when the
epoxy sets, the fly will have the desired “oval” body shape when
viewed from the front. |
 |
7. Add stick on eyes high and well
forward on the body. A small red stripe with a permanent marker represents
the gills.
(optional) Paint the belly sac with a
silver paint pen. Note that a Bay Anchovy has a rounded corner, while a
Spearing has a more squared off corner in the center of the body. |
 |
8. Add the final coating of epoxy
being sure to turn the fly in your hand while manipulating the epoxy with
a bodkin. There is no substitute for this step, as a rotating wheel will
turn the body round instead of the desired oval shape. |
 |
9. Determine the length you would like
this fly to be. Trim the hair from front toward the rear.
Trim from all sides toward the center. |
