If
I had one, and only one fly to fish, that fly would be the Jiggy Fleye. It
is a very effective fly that will imitate slender baitfish such as
spearing, bay anchovies, sand eels. The design will provoke strikes by
making the most of it’s weighted head at the eye of the hook, yet is
still easy to cast. This fleye is also very snag proof, as the winging
materials are all tied on the inside of the hooks shank, causing it to
ride point up in the water. The
jiggy head used in this tie, can be replaced with a weighed cone head with
only slightest of tying modifications. The jiggy head has a cavity in its
rear which will nicely accept a few wraps of lead wire if you wish, so you
can vary the weight to suit your fishing needs. It also has small notches
in the front that will fit around the hooks eye and flat area on it’s
sides to accept the proper size of stick on eye.
Synthetic materials lend themselves well to this pattern. The “Ultra
Jiggy” is tied using ultra hair and angel hair as flash and is deadly in
clear water. The version I chose to show you is the classic Jiggy Fleye,
at it’s best. The color pattern is what us jersey boys refer to as the
“Barnegat Bay Special”, yellow over white with and orange eye. Other
excellent color choices include tangerine over white, olive over white,
chartreuse over white, and chartreuse over yellow. Black over purple has
been my color of choice for many dark nights. For a slightly longer
profile, you can add several strands of ostrich hurl at the bend of the
hook, after you slide the weighted head forward. This version is known as
a “Modified Jiggy Fleye” and will give a bit more kick to the swimming
action of this killer fleye!
