Featherback Herring

Tying Instructions Dave Gelona

Place hook in the vice and start the thread at the eye.
Tie in a marabou quill on each side of the hook shank at the eye. Clip off the butt ends.
Tie in a light colored saddle hackle on each side of the shank, praying hands style.
Add several strands of flash to each side of the fly.  To get a wider effect, push down at the tie-in point to splay the flash, then wrap over it to secure.
Add two hackles of a darker shade over top the first hackle on each side, tying them in slightly more on top of the shank than the first.
Tie in several more hackles of a darker color (grizzly works well) on top of the last tie, again slightly higher on the shank than the last.  You want the hackles to round over top of the fly, not lay flat against each other. Add peacock herl on the top of the shank for added sparkle. Whip finish and coat head with cement.
**Optional** Glue on mylar eyes at the front of the saddles on each side.
